Love, Hate and Boneheads

Well consider mine up'ed. I just got the JavaBlogs daily update and the second most popular hit yesterday was 'up your's bill dudney'. Nice thing to wake up to. I don't mind the criticism at all, I do mind the lame way its presented. I'm not some money hungry jerk out to steal this guys $, give me a break. I get less than 80 cents from the book. Total pay was less than minimum wage for all the time I put in. Not to make excuses or anything but sheese.

Ah well, there are 12 inches of new snow on the ground, wonderful clear skies (you can see the milky way up in the mountains) and a day full of promise.

And as an aside the legit stuff he points out is why I love SourceBeat so much.

I read that lame post as well. And I think the attitude of people like that is one of the problem the Java community has.

I used to think that Slashdot is full of lamers, but now I have to admit that the Java community is no better.

Sure there are 'nice/good' people, but the level of lame rants, personal attacks, 'colorful' words, and other lousy crap, is just disappointing.

Not only in the open source community, from my experience working with Java developers for commercial products, most of us are arrogant pricks. I remember one time a collegue (a lead architect) complained about a bad implementation made by a junior developer, he said "WTF? shit this code is ugly, goddamn awful, yuck". However, he didn't do anything constructive. I had to explain to the junior developer and encourage him to do better and to ignore the lame complaint from the lead architect.

I've seen this kind of attitude over and over again. The lame post mentioned in this blog entry is one example.
Why? Are we Java developers some kind of elitist? Do we have to implement the most elegant, beautiful, of everything?

Sidenote: I have to admit it's funny to watch two lead architects arguing about which of their designs is more ellegant while neither of them is willing to look from the other's point of view.

I believe constructive arguments/discussions are good, but the fact is the Java community is full of people with lame attitude.

From my observation, those people with terrible attitude tend to have problem in their personal lives.
unhappiness + elitism = ?

You can ask other developers from other communities, ask them whether they think Java programmers are arrogant or not.
Compare TheServerSide.com with TheServerSide.net, have a look which one has the more mature people who can discuss in a nice manner without using some bad remarks every so often.

This is a plea. People, please, let's build a nicer community.

I challenge the poster of "Up yours Bill Dudney" to publicly apologize. Show that you're more than just a lamer who can't handle your frustration.
