Thoughts from a NeXTStep Guy on Cocoa Development

Hello World

Jun 01, 2007 by Bill Dudney

My first post on my objc blog. I've been away from Objective-C for many years now and I'm finally coming home. Its an exciting time and I'm looking forward to sharing the adventure of becoming an indie mac developer here on this blog.

For the past 11 years i've been doing Java and Java related consulting, I've written a ton of stuff and enjoyed quite a bit of it. However I've been stuck in the world of 'corporate drone'/'IT consultant' for far to long. I'm ready for a new adventure and I'm going to have a go at doing some mac development.

So why the name? For old timers on the platform you might remember the NeXT computer. I am one of those old timers. I purchased a NeXT pizza box (that still boots BTW) in college at Texas A&M by maxing out two credit cards and spend almost every waking hour for the next several months rooting around in AppKit. I was in love and it helped me to leave my career path of AeroSpace Engineering and become a geek. I spent several years doing NeXT development when it was an enterprise play. I loved it because it was high billable rate and I got to do cool stuff but then NeXT started to implode and was sold to apple. I had little hope that anything interesting would come from that so I when off to Java land to make a living. It was fun and I learned a bunch and had some great experiences.

So now onto my previous life of AppKit programming in a fun dynamic language with some very nice frameworks to build on.
