Episode 6 - The Final Episode

Sep 02, 2008 by Bill Dudney

I finally finished Episode 6 of The Core Animation Screencast. Man is is way over due (sorry!). It is a bit long again but its really worth it (I think, but you will have to be the judge). In this episode we wrap things up with the final bits of transformation and filter goodness so that we get a really nice looking app. The episode still has to go through post production so it will likely be 2 or 3 days till its on the site.

Here is a teaser screenshot for the curious. The pics were taken by my amazingly talented wife on a recent trip to the Grand Canyon.

This has been a particularly fun series to put together. I really enjoy doing screencasts. If you have an opinion on what would be good to have next please let me know. I'm thinking an album art city would be fun to build but there is so much to cover for all the folks new to the platform. A nice Xcode intro or IB how too would be fun.

Comments:

Thank you for an excellent series Bill and it is a great compliment to the book.

As for future topics to cover, how about some screencasts covering application 'bling' using CA? For example, a tutorial about how to flip a window like the Dashboard widgets flip over would be good as would effects such as blurring the entire screen apart from a particular window (are these possible using CA?).

One thing I struggled to get my head around initially was window management. A clear guide about loading windows from NIB files, what the File's Owner does, etc. would be very handy, especially if it leads into guides about NSViewControllers and maybe you could work with Cathy Shive on this since she has done some great articles about them.

A final suggestion is a set of screencasts about the data views in IB. You could start with the basics of Table Views and Outline Views and then cover enhancing them with using custom cells and also cover controls such as Collection Views and the Predicate Editor.

As a final suggestion, if you are going to produce these independently of The Pragmatic Programmers then perhaps distributing them via the Mac Developer Network would be a good idea.

Thanks Simon!

I will be sticking with the Prag's, Scotty is a great guy but I've so enjoyed working with the Prag's that could not bring myself to jump ship.

I fully understand and I only suggested it in case the Prags preferred to have screencasts which tied it to their titles. It's great news if they are going to branch out into a wide range of screencast content.
